History: NC 904 was born in 1937 as a renumbering of NC 761. It ran from US 76 Fair Bluff east to Tabor City, then dropped south on today's US 701 Business to the South Carolina line, continuing as SC 904.

About 1951, US 701 was moved from today's NC 410 south of Tabor City to today's US 701 Business, which may have truncated NC 904 to Tabor City.
In 1954, NC 904 was extended west as new primary routing to NC 130.
Between 1956-58, NC 904 was extended east as new primary routing to Seaside.
Between 1959-63, NC 904 was extended to Ocean Isle Beach.

Comment: NC 904 is yet another ride through farm and swampland, but does feature the highest multiplex in the South, with NC 905.
NC 904 was the highest route number in North Carolina from 1937-1956/58.
NC 904 is mentioned from I-95 at the NC 130 interchange.
