NC 709: was born around 1923, running from NC 65 near Wentworth north to Leaksville (now Eden). NC 709 did not touch NC 70, but may have briefly touched NC 708 before it became NC 65.
In 1925, NC 709 extended north to then-VA 337 (curr VA 87).
About 1930 NC 709 was renumbered in its entirety as an extension of today's NC 54, which once ventured to Virginia.

Today, NC 709 is mostly secondary, followed by: NC 87 from NC 65 north about a mile; Ashley Loop out to the east then north back to NC 87; NC 87 to NC 770; S. Hamilton St into central Eden; Stone Hwy east to Bridge St.; N Oakland Ave back to NC 14-87 (except used Meeks through Fairview); NC 14-87 for a few hundred feet; "Old NC 87" to the state line
