NC 49-A #1: The first NC 49-A was born in 1940 as a renumbering of NC 62-A. It ran from US 52/NC 740 New London northeast to the just-extended NC 49.
In 1948 this became NC 6. Today it is part of NC 8.

NC 49-A #2: The second NC 49-A was born in 1947 as a renumbering of NC 49. It ran from NC 49 southwest of Asheboro, entering town on Albermarle Ave, then north on Park to Salisbury, then east to US 220 (now Business 220) which it followed north from Asheboro a couple miles, then northeast through Central Falls to meet back up with NC 49 in Liberty.
NC 49-A was downgraded to secondary status about 1967.
