History: NC 218 appeared in 1935 as new routing, running from Mint Hill to Polkton. Initially, NC 218's eastern end was at today's SR 1419, Old US 74

Between 1939-44, NC 218 was extended east along Old US 74, replacing a bit of US 74 out to the modern US 74 routing.
In 196x, NC 218 was re-routed in Polkton to drop south over new construction to US 74 as it does today, leaving behind SR 1419.

Comment: NC 218 is pretty quiet but its western end is now inside the Charlotte suburban reach with I-485 coming along.
