NC 217 appeared about 1933 as new routing, running from NC 21 (now US 401) to at least NC 55 (now NC 82) Erwin.
By 1936, NC 217 was extended along NC 82 to US 421/NC 60 (now SR 1718 Denim Dr) In 1957, NC 217 was extended north to its current end, replacing part of a rerouted US 421 and a tiny piece of rerouted NC 55.
