Formerly:

NC 195 appeared about 1938 running from US 301 Garysburg northeast to the Virginia line. Garysburg to Seaboard was a renumbering of NC 305 while the rest was new routing to meet the new alignment of VA 195 (VA 195 used to drop due south from Branchville VA on SR 701).
Virginia renumbered its side to VA 186 in Aug 1973 (CTB) to accomodate I-195 in Richmond. The first NC Official to show NC 186 was the 1975 Official (The '74 Official showed VA 186 and NC 195).
