Appeared in 1975 as an upgrade to SR 2803, running from US 64/NC 49 Asheboro to the new NC Zoological Park and Gardens.
In 1977, NC 159 was rerouted to loop back south to US 220. The stub into the Zoo became NC 159 SPUR.
In 2019, NC 159 was moved onto the newly constructed Zoo Connector from NC 159 Spur northwest to a new connection back to Zoo Parkway. The previous route due north from NC 159 is no longer reachable from this direction. |
