History: NC 118 appeared in 1932 as new primary routing. Initially it ran from NC 43 southwest to US 70/NC 10 (now NC 55) Fort Barnwell.
About 1940, All but 1.5 miles of NC 118 were rerouted to head west to NC 11 Grifton. The old route to Fort Barnwell became SR 1450/1470/1472/1471 Nelson Rd and Maple Cypress Rd.
In 1970, NC 118 was extended west along what had been NC 11 over Contentnea Creek, then over SR 1704 out to the new NC 11 alignment.

Comment: NC 118 does not get mentioned from mainline US 17 but I think it might on US 17 Business in Vanceboro.
Rand McNally maps of 1980s-90s erroneously showed NC 118 west continuing to US 13 near Goldsboro.
