The Road: Begins at US 64/NC 28 Highlands and ends at the Georgia State Line near Scaly, all within Macon County. The route continues a few miles to US 23-441 Dillard, GA.

History: NC 106 was born 1940 as upgraded routing, running the way it does now. This is the second NC 106.

NC 106 #1 An original state highway that initially ran from NC 10 (now US 23 Bus) Sylva south to NC 28 (now US 64) Cashiers.
In 1930, NC 106 south was extended as new routing south to High Hampton
In 1931, NC 106 was extended south as upgraded routing to the South Carolina line.
In 1940, NC 106 was renumbered as NC 107, which it remains today except it used "Old NC 107" through Cullowhee and Western Carolina University.

Comment:
NC 106 briefly comes back into NC after entering Georgia. Reports are this is not very conspicuous although there is an SR 1691 that touches NC 106 on this small incursion.
