The Road: Begins at US 52 Bus/NC 89 Mt. Airy and ends at the Virginia State Line nearby, all within Surry County. The road continues 14 miles as VA 103 to VA 8 near Stuart, VA.

History: NC 103 was born in late 1940 running as it does now. This is the second NC 103. This was a renumbering of the last surviving bit of original NC 80.

NC 103 #1 appeared in 1925, running from NC 10 (now US 70) Mebane north to NC 144 (now NC 49).
In 1930, NC 103 was extended south as new routing to NC 54 near Swepsonville.
In late 1940, NC 103 was renumbered as NC 119.
