History: NC 82 was born in late 1934 as a renumbering of a small piece of NC 55, running from US 421 (just Denim Dr) Erwin south to US 301 Godwin.
In 1957, NC 82 was extended north to its current end, replacing part of a rerouted US 421 and a tiny piece of rerouted NC 55.
In 1971, NC 82 was extended south to US 13 as an upgrade to Cumberland SR 1810 and Sampson SR 1600.

Comment: NC 82 is a strictly minor connecting route northeast of Fayetteville.
NC 82 has been the source of Rand McNally errors over the years: Shown expanded south to NC 24 in the 1960s and also shown as NC 85 in the 1980s.
