History: NC 57 is an original state highway. In 1922 it ran from NC 13 (now SR 1700) Morningside east through Oxford before ending at NC 50 (current US 1 Business) Henderson.
In 1925 the NC 13 approach to Roxboro from the south was altered to what I believe is the modern US 501 approach, leaving behind SR 1700 Summerset Rd. NC 57 was extended north on SR 1700 to meet the new NC 13 location (current US 158-501 split)

In 1930 NC 57 west was extended northwest as new primary routing to end at NC 62 Milton.
In 1931, NC 57 from Roxboro to Henderson was renumbered as part of NC 48 #1. Today this is US 158 and Business 158 through Oxford and Henderson.

In 1935, NC 57 was extended south to NC 14 (current NC 86) as new primary routing.
In 1947 or 1948, NC 57 was rerouted in Orange COunty to continue northeast to US 501, then followed US 501 to Roxboro. The original Orange COunty to Roxboro route became NC 157.

Comments:
NC 57's route from Hillsborough to Roxboro doesn't make much sense to me...
