Creation: SC 917 appeared in 1940, running from US 501 (now SC 319) Cool Spring north to SC 57 (now SC 41) Mullins. This is the only SC 917.
Adjustments: In 1947, SC 917 was rerouted in Horry County to run to Finkleas Crossroads like today. Part of this was a replacement of SC 804. The old route south to Cool Spring became S-26-23.

In 1952, SC 917 was extended north with SC 41 from Mullins, then replaced SC 573 to Latta, then replaced part of SC 38 to its current western endpoint.

About 1968, SC 917 was extended with SC 38 to I-95.
About 2000, SC 917 west was truncated back to SC 38 at its 1952-68 endpoint.
Improvements:  SC 917 became fully paved in 1949. There are no substantive multilane segments to SC 917.
Comment: SC 917 is the highest number to survive the 1947 de-numbering, and remains the highest number in use today.
