SC 649: Appeared in 1942 as a renumbering of SC 28 ALT from SC 28 to Ellenton, plus new primary route both directions where the route ran from the Savannah River to the Barnwell County Line.
Between 1943-46, SC 649 was extended east into Barnwell County as new primary routing to meet SC 648 coming from the opposite direction along the same road. In 1947, SC 649 was downgraded to S-2-40 west of SC 28 and S-2-44 east of SC 28. In Barnwell County it became S-6-47 and S-6-48. Today SC 649 is part of Savannah River Site Route 3.
