Around 1990, SC 277 was extended south over P-4001 to end at US 76.

Improvements: SC 277 was fully paved and multilane upon designation.
Comment: SC 277 was the only connection from I-20 to I-77 for several years before I-77 was built further southeast.
SC 277 was supposed to continue west around to meet I-126 at its Huger St interchange. SC 277 was built south of SC 16 to accomodate this extension. Some ROW and railroad moving occurred, but community opposition to the highway traversing cemeteries doomed the proposal. SC 277 was supposed to then parallel the river south to where Columbia wanted I-77 to run, essentially parallel to Rosewood. Thanks to Alan Reames for this summation of SC 277's intentions on the 1966 Columbia Area Transportation Study (COATS).
