SC 96 #1: Appeared in 1926 as a renumbering of SC 501, running from US 1/SC 9 Cheraw (likely Front St at Church St) northwest to North Carolina.
In 1933 SC 96 was taken over by US 601. Today it is US 52 except SC 96 used S-13-62 Rocky Hill Rd/Brocks Mill Rd.

SC 96 #2: Appeared in 1932 as new primary routing by Act of SC Legislature in a mileage swap with SC 381, running from SC 9 northwest of Bennettsville north to North Carolina heading for Hamlet NC.
In 1938, SC 96 was renumbered as part of SC 38. SC 96 used SC 38 Byp; Rogers Ln; S-35-187 Wilder Rd; S-35-261 Wilder Rd; Radio Rd which used to connect diagonally with S-35-63 east of SC 38; Old 38 Hwy; SC 38 through the SC 79 area; S-35-166 Pineville School Rd

SC 96 #3: Appeared in 1940 as new primary routing. Ran from SC 200 near the NC Line east to SC 906 (current SC 9) near the Lynches River. A second discontinuous piece of SC 96 appeared from SC 9 (current US 601) north 2 miles to eventual SC 943 (now S-29-37) Taxahaw.
In 1942, SC 96 was extended west to US 521 as new primary routing, bringing SC 96 to a total length of 19 miles.
In 1947, SC 96 was downgraded to S-29-33 west of SC 200 (now S-29-28); S-29-28 between SC 200 and SC 522; S-29-23 from SC 522 to SC 9 (now S-29-28 and a little S-29-39); and S-29-27 on the Taxahaw piece (a little of this is now S-29-123 as well).
