SC 85 #1: Appeared in 1937 as a renumbering of part of SC 8, running from SC 8-81 east to US 29 (now SC 20) Piedmont.
In 1938, SC 85 was renumbered as SC 86. Today it is S-4-17 west of I-85 and SC 86 east of I-85.

SC 85 #2: Appeared in 1938 as a renumbering of SC 95, running from US 1 near McBee north through Chesterfield to the North Carolina line.
Almost immediately, SC 85 was striaghtened out in the SC 109 area, leaving behind what is now essentially a dirt track from Skipper Creek on the west side, crossing today's SC 145 at Blacks Creek, then back across at Riley Rd before meeting back up with today's SC 145 at Wallace Prong Creek.
In 1961, SC 85 was renumbered as SC 145.
