Creation: I-95 appeared on maps of South Carolina between 1962-64. The 1964 Official Map shows I-95 under construction from US 17 Hardeeville north about 6 miles. No other parts of I-95 were shown as even proposed.
Adjustments: By 1967, I-95 was shown as under construction: US 17 Hardeeville to US 17 Ridgeland; US 17 Pocotaligo to SC 63 Walterboro; US 301 CONN (now US 15-301) Santee to the NC State Line. The rest was shown as proposed. No open segments of I-95 were shown on the 1967 Official Map.
Between 1968-70, I-95 finally had open freeway in South Carolina, from SC 527 north to SC 9-57 Dillon. All other parts were shown in 1970 to be under construction except GA State Line to US 17 Hardeeville, US 17 Ridgeland to US 17 Pocotaligo and SC 63 Walterboro to US 78 St. George.
In 1971 or 1972, I-95 was opened from SC 9-57 to the NC State Line and from SC 527 south to the US 301 CONN Santee. Also, I-95 was opened between US 17 Ridgeland and US 17 south of Coosawhatchie (no exit here now) and also from US 17 north of Coosawhatchie (no exit here either, now) to SC 63 Walterboro. In 1972 only the piece from Georgia to Hardeeville was shown as proposed.
The 1973 Official Map shows I-95 under construction from Georgia to Hardeeville.
In 1974 or 1975, I-95 was opened continuously from US 17 Hardeeville to SC 61.
In 1976, I-95 was opened from SC 61 to US 301 CONN. This made I-95 complete in South Carolina except from Georgia to US 17-321 Hardeeville.
I-95 from Georgia to Hardeeville opened in 1978.
Improvements: 4 lane freeway since inception. One six lane section from below I-20 to above SC 170 in the Florence area was completed in 2003.
I-95 has added two exits from its original lineup: US 278 (current SC 336) Ridgeland (1989 or 1990) and S-21-83 Honda Way in Timmonsville (btw 1998-2000).
Comment: I-95 is relatively quiet in South Carolina, especially south of Florence. Other than Florence I-95 doesn't pass near any large towns - it is a 200 mile ride through the swamp for the most part.
I-95 received its exit numbers in 1976.
In the early-mid 80s, a proposal to build an interstate parallel to I-95 that would've run from Walterboro east to Summerville and Moncks Corner, than north back to I-95 in the Florence-Dillon region started appearing in the Charleston Post-Courier. A number was never suggested, and the proposal never got serious interest.
The fact that I-95 clips a tiny piece of Marlboro County is not signed in the field.
