Skyline Drive
SKYLINE DRIVE From:
and Blue Ridge Parkway Afton To:
Front Royal Total Length: 105 miles
|
Creation: Skyline Drive began as Skyland Drive in 1933, with the completed section from VA 4 (curr US 33) to US 211.
Adjustments: Between 1935-37, Skyline Drive was extended north to VA 12 (curr US 340). The remaining section from US 33 to US 250 was opened around 1940.
Posting: Skyline Drive does not have a shield that I am aware of, unlike the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Comments: The 2001 VDOT Route Log says Skyline Drive's right-of-way is designated as VA 48.
Skyline Drive is a scenic route designed for 35 mph traffic on top of the Shenandoah Mountains. Like the Blue Ridge Parkway, it bypasses all towns, and has limited services.
Unlike the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are no SR intersections. US 33, US 211, and US 250 are interchanges. Because the road is within Shenandoah National Park, you have to pay the entrance fee to reach the road, which is about the park's main attraction. Thus, in reality this is Virginia's longest toll road.
Skyline Drive is heavily traveled in the fall season for colors and for the view (it was once possible to see the Washington Monument in DC from the road). Everyone flocks to the Front Royal end and heads south. A tip is to drive down US 340 or US 29 to the south end and head north.
Personally, I find the route very nice, though I have managed not to drive the US 211-340 section yet.
