The Road: Begins at US 52-NC 8 New London and ends at NC 24-27-73 Albemarle all within Stanly County.

History: NC 740 was born in 1929 ro 1930, running from NC 74 Albemarle northeast to Badin then northwest to NC 80 (now part of NC 8) New London.
In 1933, NC 740 was extended north from New London to NC 62 (current NC 49), replacing an original part of NC 62.
By 1935, NC 740 was truncated back to US 52 (part of NC 8 today) New London. The brief extension became NC 62A. Today it is part of NC 8.

It appears that between 1956-58 NC 740's south end was rerouted slightly east to match up with the new NC 27 bypass of Albemarle, leaving behind old Badin Rd.

Between 1980-82, US 52 was routed around New London. As a result, NC 740 was extended west over SR 1440 out to the new alignment.

Comment:
NC 740 is the long orphaned spur of NC 74 remaining in the modern world. Its purpose is to connect Badin to the rest of the primary road network.
