NC 481

The first NC 481 appeared in 1925 as new primary routing, running from NC 48 Roanoke Rapids northeast to NC 40 (now US 301) Pleasant HIll.
In 1926, NC 481 was renumbered as NC 40 (this is roughly today's NC 48) and the second NC 481 was born, running from NC 48 Garysburg north to NC 40 (now NC 48) Pleasant Hill. This replaced a brief routing of NC 40.
In 1930, NC 481 was renumbered as part of NC 40 again (today this is US 301) and the third NC 481 was born. It replaced NC 40 and again ran from NC 48 Roanoke Rapids to NC 40 Pleasant Hill.
In 1932, NC 481 was renumbered as NC 40-A. Today it is part of NC 48.

Comment: NC 481 is the only route to be designated 4 times in North Carolina, if the craziness described above is not a map error.
