NC 461 was created in 1964 or 1965 as upgraded routing, running from NC 561 St. John's to US 13 outside Winton.
In 2000, NC 461 was extended with US 13 north to Winton using SR 1457 Main St (old US 13), then east with NC 45 to Coefield, then along SR 1455 which it replaced along with some of SR 1400 to Pilands Crossroads. A field visit by Adam Prince reveals that NC 461 ends at the entrance to a Nucor Steel Plant.
