History: NC 251 was born around 1981. It initially began at US 19-23-70 very near I-240 and ran along the French Broad River to end at US 25-70 northeast of Marshall. This was a renumbering of a piece of NC 191, but mostly a renumbering of US 25-70.
In 1991 or 1992, NC 251's southern end was moved to the Broadway exit as it is now, leaving behind secondary Riverside Dr.

Comment: NC 251 follows the French Broad River very closely for nearly all its length.
Just across the freeway from NC 251's southern end is the lovely Asheville Botanical Garden.
