History: NC 168 was born about 1958 as a renumbering of NC 170. Initially NC 168 entered North Carolina like now, but veered southwest on today's NC 34 to go to Elizabeth City, then southeast to end at Weeksville.
In 1979, NC 168 was rerouted to run as it does today, replacing NC 34. The route to Elizabeth City and Weeksville became NC 34. Today, Elizabeth City to Weeksville is mostly NC 344.

Comment: NC 168 is a major thoroughfare for travelers trying to reach the Outer Banks. It is now multilane on its entire length to handle the traffic load.
In the early 90s the Moyock stoplight noted for cross traffic that the wiat in summertime would be 5 minutes. How convenient.
The Currituck CH (also where the Knotts Island Ferry is accessed) was already bypassed by the time NC 168 was routed in the area.
