NC 148 was born in June 2009 (NCDOT) as an upgrade to SR 2010, running from US 258 to NC 58.
In Aug 2013 (NCDOT), NC 148 was extended west as newly constructed freeway to end at US 70 west of Kinston On 3/1/21, NC 148 east was extended as new freeway to NC 11 northeast of Kinston.

Comment: | It seems like a logical extension would be to carry NC 148 past US 70 back to NC 11 for a NC 11 Bypass of Kinston, but a 2010 feasibility study by NCDOT shows an extension only to the upcoming US 70 Bypass/Future I-42, with a NC 11 bypass on the east side of Kinston. |
