The first NC 136 appeared in 1974 as new construction from NC 73 Concord to about its I-85 overpass, then as an upgrade to SR 2081 and 2114 in Kannapolis to end at US 29-601 Kannapolis.
Between 1985-87, NC 136 was extended over Cabarrus SR 1609 and Iredell SR 1146 to end at NC 115-152 Mooresville. In Kannapolis there was a brief duplex wih US 29-A.

In July 1997 (NCDOT), NC 136 was extended east to US 601, mostly as new routing and as a replacement of the southernmost bit of US 601 Business.
In Oct 2002, NC 136 was renumbered as NC 3.

Comment: Current NC 136 is a mystery to me. Why has this needed to be a state highway back to the 1930s?
