History: NC 113 appeared in 1964 as an upgrade to SR 1001, running from NC 18 to NC 93 (now SR 1316)
In 1977, NC 113 was extended north to its current endpoint, replacing part of NC 93.

The 1st NC 113 appeared in 1930 as new primary routing, running from NC 18 near Toluca northeast to US 321/NC 10-16 Newton.
In late 1934, NC 113 was renumbered as NC 73. Today it is part of NC 10.
A few commercial maps misidentify this as NC 13.

The 2nd NC 113 appeared in 1937 or 1938 as a renumbering of US 301 through Halifax. This shows up explicitly on Halifax County maps from 1944-57 (The 1938 Halifax map does show US 301 Bypassing Halifax). The 1962 Halifax County map shows it as US 301 Business. My best guess is that in 1960 NC 113 was renumbered as US 301 Business.

Comment: Today's NC 113 is pretty straight route considering where it is, unlike its peers in the area - NC 93, US 221 and NC 18.
Some of southbound NC 113 is technically in Ashe County.
