History: NC 99 was born about 1940 as new primary routing, running from US 264 Pantego north to NC 32. This is the third NC 99.
Between 1985-87, NC 99 was extended along to US 264 to Belhaven, then replaced part of NC 92 south to NC 92-306.

The first NC 99 was born in 1935 as new primary routing from US 264 near Bunyan northeast to NC 97 (now Old 97 Rd jct with NC 32).
In 1938, NC 99 became part of NC 97 (today this is NC 32 except it used Briggs Rd in the Pinetown area) and the second NC 99 was born by replacing what had been the NC 97 southeast ending to US 264 near Pantego.
In 1940, NC 99 #2 was downgraded to SR 1621 Old 97 Rd.

Comment: NC 99's length in Hyde County is only 0.1 miles.
NC 99 passes through some seriously empty territory north of US 264.
It would've made more sense to me to renumber NC 92 east of the ferry as NC 306.
NC 99's northern few miles is now a useless duplex with NC 45. They should either drop the 99 designation or extend it to replace NC 149.
